Round 3 vs NWST: Board 2

King turned what could have been a Caro Kann into an French Advance Variation with the consequence of loosing a tempo. This in itself is unfortunate but not material.  King continued the normal path of attacking d4 but being a tempo down this does not really work as white has no problem defending d4.

after 11. f4

In this key position black tries to develop his g8 knight with f6 which is a questionable move. Here and as in other french advance lines the black knight goes to the unusual h6 square. After f6 black went after the e5 pawn practically daring his opponent to start a frontal assault.

Interestingly enough this attack does not succeed easily but black had to find the right defense. Again Nh6 was the right move.  Black played h5 giving white g6 and with it the game.
